Holiday Story Meme!

The holiday season has officially begun, and I am looking forward to some good times with friends, colleagues, and family over the next six weeks. But just because I have a stack of invitations from people who can bonk me on the head with an empty coke bottle if they feel like it does not mean I don't want to celebrate with the wonderful people who live in my computer, too!

Therefore I have created a holiday meme, mainly out of selfish desire to connect in some way with you over the holidays. Feel free to repost some form of this in your own journal and spread the fun!

Here's how it works:

Write a holiday story. It can be anything, so long as it is connected to the holidays somehow. (Personally, I am hoping for at least one story where someone makes a dragon wear a Santa hat.) Post it in your journal, and then comment here with a link to it.

That's it!

Happy holidays!

You know, for all four of you who read this. ;-)

• Leave me a comment saying "Those who eat apples are meant to rule the world."
• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions

The questions given to me by chinese_lily :

1. If you HAD to choose one country to live in for the rest of your life, where would it be and why?
Just randomly choosing? Maybe New Zealand. But I've never been there, so I don't really know. The UK is super, but also terrifically expensive. Maybe the US. I do like my country. But let's go with New Zealand, for kicks. It's beautiful, it has sheep, it's not terrifically expensive, and everydayjoy says they give chocolate with coffee in the cafes.

2. You adopt a dog from the local shelter. What sort of dog and what do you call it?
I want a BORDER COLLIE! They usually have names like Fly and Fritz and Kate, but I think I'd call mine Arkadi. Then I'd have to find a place to live with some land around it and get something for my collie to herd. Like goats. Or children. Something.

3. You've invited me to your house for a meal. What have you made?
I'm in the mood to make Thai Pumpkin Soup for someone. But if you were coming over tonight, you might get stuck with some of the giant pot of borsh I made this weekend.

4. Who was your first friend?

My brother, Richard. Once I was filling out a form about myself, and I got the question "favorite toy" and for some reason asked the adult what that meant. She said, "What you like best to play with." So my paper said, "My favorite toy: My brother Richard."

5. What do YOU think is the answer to life, the universe and everything?
Communion. With one's self, the people around one, the universe, art, nature... all living things, really. My Code of Ethics is simple: what moves me toward communion is right, what pulls me from it is wrong. Chocolate, obviously, is very right according to this scheme.

I winned.

Didn't make 5,000 words today, but 3,474 is not too shabby. Some of them were not for NaNo (my brain is refusing to behave). :-P Still, I am not terribly disappointed. I did work from nine to eight, after all.

13823 / 50000

BUT I have a very exciting announcement to make! I crossed 200,000 words today! I did it! I made my Get Your Words Out goal!!!

202449 / 200000

NaNoWriMo, Day One

10,401 words. Woah.

10401 / 50000

My characters have been established, have had big dilemmas, discovered a major secret, and are currently touring a school for gifted children and eating oatmeal raisin cookies. Nifty!

Also, they decided to move to a different city. In a different country. So my plotting is messed up already. Hooray!

New Layout

Since I can't sleep, I can has a new layout instead.

It has bamboo. My bamboo. :-)

Come see!

Bren LJ Idol

So, I've been writing for a competition called LJ Idol. It started in March, and was sudden-death elimination format. Each week we were given a prompt, and had less than a week to create a short story based on it. Then everyone voted, and the entries with the fewest votes were eliminated. It was all anonymous until the very end, so your writing had to be consistently good every week for you to be able to make it through every round.

When I entered, I looked at the calibre of the writers in the competition and thought, "I'll do well to make top ten." Which was true. But, to my great surprise and delight, I came in third!

I also wrote every single week, so I got an award for that.

Hooray for the confidence boost!

Also, now that the contest is over, I can finally share my stories with you...

104 Books You Really Should Read

because Danielle asked me to...

Ordered difficulty and alphabetically. Roughly. I have read every one of these books, and I did not include any books which I myself have not read and been changed by. Which means The Kite Runner is not on here, because I haven't read it yet....

It is 104 because I could not stop after 100.

How many of these have you read? What would you add to the list, and why? Have any questions about any of these books?
